Spirit lead me
One complete swing of a pendulum from point to point is called a "period." What will history say of us when it looks back on this period that has our names and faces emblazoned on it?
The pendulum swings. It has swung far and wide over the decades. Back and forth. To and fro. It swings. Decades ago our forefathers watched as the weight shifted and began this current period. Then we we watched as the shining weight approached and passed before us. And in the passing we caught a glimpse of ourselves. Hungrily we took in our reflections and we puffed with pride at what we saw....and we were hungry for more. Now that the shining reflection has passed from our sight we are unnerved. In wonder we watch the weight climb higher and higher and we gather together in our own divisive paradigms wondering at the final height of its ascent. And still it climbs. Fueled solely by opposition. Constantly gaining the energy needed for its return journey. And it will return. That's the nature of the mechanism. Yin and yang. Right and left. Feast and famine. And it's in the trajectory of the very opposition we fear that we will find balance. Fleeting, temporary, ever-shifting balance. So why do we stand in wonder as the pendulum swings? We lament as if we haven't read even one history book or listened to any geriatric tale of endurance! We raise our voices in a cultural emotional fervor of forgotten pasts and uncertain futures. We have forgotten what it is to have patience with time and with each other.

In the economy of my life there is nothing worse than being a disappointment to someone. I found an article this morning that provides interesting insight. It also gives me pause as a parent when problems come up that require discipline.

Homework, tiredness, and distractions seem to abound at the very mention of family Bible study. As tough as it can be to dig in and make this worthy commitment, I have found something tougher: the questions that can come from reading scripture. This can be especially true with young children. |
