Spirit lead me
It's an age old story. The small David opposing the giant Goliath. We see a similar story line in many modern movies. An everyday man standing for his convictions against the powerful business tycoon. The cancer weary teen facing insurmountable odds and still enjoying life to its fullest. It is a story line we can relate to. In case you aren't familiar with the Bible story let me outline it.
The giant stands on the hill and vehemently threatens all within hearing. Death. War. Pain. These are the themes of the giant and he is relentless. Day after day he is taunting the opposing crowd. The objects of his scorn stand daily dressed and in battle array. Adorned with breastplate and sword. Chain mail and helmet. Standing with the stance of a warrior. Standing yet never moving. They are held fast by the ridicule of the giant. Then one unassuming young man begins to move through the battle ranks asking questions and listening to the answers. Those standing opposite of the giant are obviously terrified. They know the risk and the reward yet none are willing to advance. They have focused too long on the giant and lost all sense of victory. But this one, this brother, he knows the author of victory. He has found victory at the hand of the only one able to do so. So in confidence he takes his stand among the front of the ranks and hears the insult the giant throws at him and still he steps out from the crowd. The only one willing to stand alone and become the giant's singular target. And then the giant hones in on his target and turns up the heat. Threats. Blasphemy. He seems drunk on his own power and suddenly fumbles forward certain of his own victory. But this brave singular man takes aim and with one single motion he ends the giant. All are stunned. All except for the brave warrior. He was certain of victory in the Lord. (1st Samuel 17)
Beloved, we are not the brave David in this story. We are not Goliath the giant (though we may often be found standing on his side) So who are we? We are the cowering crowd, the Israelites. We are standing idle in our armor seemingly ready for battle and scared to death to move. There is no brave David found among us except for Christ. It is He that moves among us in His Spirit asking the questions and hearing our frightened reply. And He tells us that He has already conquered the giant. Yet, over the whisper of Jesus we hear the jeering giant even today echoing across the face of culture. And we are frozen in place because of it, afraid to move. We have forgotten the Author of victory and cower at the centuries old echo of death and destruction. Christian, let us be renewed once again by the bravery of the One who has conquered when we would not and could not. He has won for us and we can follow Him forward into the fray because He is able to keep that which is His. So, onward Christian soldier, onward. Let's chase those that stand with the giant into the proverbial hills and claim our victory in Christ. Victory over the sins of our flesh and our land. There are no crowns for safely watching the story unfold, but for fierce perseverance in the face of struggle and persecution. "Blessed are those" who endure such things. Be blessed brother. Be blessed sister. Be blessed.
